Frequently Asked Questions

About MainelyNP and Direct Primary Care

  • What is Direct Primary Care?

Direct Primary Care (DPC) is a model for primary care practice that takes the insurance and health administrators out of the exam room. For a monthly membership fee for our all-inclusive services, we spend more time with you and less time with paperwork. You get more comprehensive, personalized primary care because the main focus is you!

  • What services are included in my membership?

We provide full service primary care. In addition to direct access to your provider, extended appointment times, no wait times, and transparent pricing, we include several services in your membership. Within your membership fee, we include a set of annual labs, in house testing (urine dip, strep, flu, mono), various procedures (ear wax removal, wart cryotherapy, skin biopsy, EKG, etc.). We do our best to keep all your cost within your membership fee. If you do require services not included in your membership (ie. imaging, biopsy analysis, etc.), you are given a clear price through our contracted discount rates. You never walk out the door without knowing the cost of your healthcare. We guarantee no surprise bills and strive to avoid added cost to your membership.

  • Do you require long term contracts?

No. Your membership is month-to-month. Of course we hope to establish a long term relationship as your health care provider! If you find that this model or practice is not for you, you can cancel with 30 days written notice.

  • What about my prescriptions?

You can still use your insurance to get your prescriptions. However, we also have prescription drug discounts up to 95% off pharmacy prices. We work with you to find the best pricing for your prescriptions.

  • Do you prescribe controlled substances?

We are able to provide controlled substances for acute (short term) management. However, we do not provide prescription management of controlled substances for chronic conditions.

  • Do you take insurance?

We removed health insurance from the exam room so your healthcare relationship is strictly between you and your provider. Because we are not hassled by insurance for our services, we provide high quality services. We do not bill insurance for our provider services or provide superbills for insurance reimbursement. However, your insurance can be billed for larger costs such as speciality labs, imaging, specialist visits, vaccines, and other outside services. Pending your HSA/FSA company, our fees can be compliant with HSA/FSA accounts as memberships and be a qualified medical expense. You should double check with your benefits company. However, we do recommend paying annually or semi-annually as the best practice in order to use these accounts.

  • How are you able to spend so much time with your patients?

Traditional insurance-based primary care providers have 2500-3500 patients. We limit ours to a fraction of this per provider to ensure you with individualized, comprehensive and high-quality care. This gives Amy time to get to know each patient personally and develop quality relationships with her patients.

  • Do I still need insurance?

Yes. DPC is a primary care medical service and is not considered any type of insurance. It is recommended that you still carry medical insurance (catastrophic care) or health share coverage to cover any unforeseen events as well as non-routine labs, some medications, specialist visits, emergency care, hospitalizations and surgery. If you need insurance, we can help introduce you to some great resources that we trust.

  • Why pay for insurance and a membership fee? Why pay twice?

Right now, you already do! You pay an insurance premium and then any further fees up until you meet your deductible. As a DPC member, rather than pay higher insurance based rates towards a deductible you may never meet, you pay a flat rate for all your primary care services. There are no copays, surprise bills, hidden fees, or unknown extra charges. Your membership covers annual labs, in-house testing and procedures as well as comprehensive consultation and follow-up care. If you have not met your deductible and we do not provide a necessary service, we can help to find you the best prices for that service and help coordinate your care with outside services.

  • How do I enroll?

Click HERE to enroll today. After enrolling you will be directed to the members page where you will be able to self schedule.  We will reach out within 48 hours to touch base and confirm your membership. You can also contact us via email or phone to set up a free “meet and greet” with Amy to see if MainelyNP Primary Care is the right fit for you!

  • Can you take care of my children?

Of course! Your kids will see a board certified family nurse practitioner trained to take care of them from infancy through teenage years and on to adulthood. This is actually a major benefit of joining a family practice - no need to change to an adult provider after your kids reach a certain age. In order for kids to join, we do require that a parent or guardian is part of the practice as well. We would love to get to know the whole family.

  • What about community events?

Members will have access to monthly group education events. Non-members can attend these events for a low cost. We will develop additional group visits for specific chronic conditions as requested by our members.

  • What is your availability?

The magic of direct primary care is that we will be available to you when you need us. Members are able to message NP Amy directly during business hours 8am - 6pm Monday through Friday.  Our in office availability will be Tuesdays and Thursdays 8am-6pm and will be available for telehealth visits as needed. While Amy is available after hours, we ask patients to reserve after hour calls and messages for urgent and emergent needs.

We're here to help answer all your questions! If you don't see your question here, feel free to contact us via phone or email. We generally reply to messages within 2 business days!
